It is typically performed alongside scaling (which removes tartar from above and below the gum line). Together, scaling and root planing create a clean environment that allows gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth roots.
Local anesthesia is applied to ensure your comfort during the procedure, as we will be working below the gum line.
Using specialized instruments, we remove plaque and tartar deposits from the tooth surfaces and below the gum line.
The root surfaces are carefully smoothed to remove bacterial toxins and create a surface that promotes healing.
After healing, we reassess gum pocket depths to evaluate improvement and determine if additional treatment is needed.

Root planing is typically charged per quadrant of the mouth. The total cost depends on how many areas of your mouth require treatment. Factors affecting cost include: number of quadrants requiring treatment, severity of tartar buildup and gum disease, number of visits needed to complete treatment, need for local anesthesia or sedation, and follow-up periodontal maintenance requirements. Most dental insurance plans provide coverage for scaling and root planing as a periodontal treatment. We accept CDCP and will help maximize your benefits.
