A periodontal abscess is a localized collection of pus in the gum tissue caused by bacterial infection, requiring drainage, deep cleaning, and often antibiotics to eliminate the infection and prevent spread.
A periodontal abscess is a dental emergency that requires prompt treatment. At BK Dental in Toronto, we provide urgent care to drain abscesses, eliminate infection, and relieve your pain quickly.
Book a ConsultationA periodontal abscess is a pocket of pus that forms in the gum tissue, usually as a result of bacterial infection in a deep periodontal pocket or from trapped debris. Unlike a tooth abscess (which originates from the tooth pulp), a periodontal abscess begins in the gum and supporting structures. It causes significant pain, swelling, and can spread if not treated promptly. Periodontal abscesses commonly occur in patients with existing gum disease.

We examine the area, take X-rays if needed, and determine the extent and source of the infection.
Under local anesthesia, the abscess is drained to release pus and relieve pressure.
The infected pocket is thoroughly cleaned and irrigated to remove bacteria and debris.
Antibiotics may be prescribed, and follow-up care addresses any underlying periodontal disease.
Following your aftercare instructions carefully will help ensure optimal healing. Seek immediate care if swelling increases, you develop difficulty swallowing or breathing, or fever persists after starting antibiotics.
Treatment cost depends on the severity of the abscess and whether additional procedures are needed. Emergency visits may have additional fees. Factors affecting cost include: complexity of drainage procedure, need for surgical intervention, antibiotic prescriptions, follow-up periodontal treatment required, and whether tooth extraction becomes necessary. Emergency dental treatment is often covered by insurance plans. We accept CDCP and offer urgent care payment options.
